Data For Development started off with a panel discussion that took a deep dive into projects that use big data to tackle issues in global development as well as address policy and ethical considerations. We were pleased to welcome participants from Atlas AI, Descartes Lab, Orbital Insight, and Planet Labs.

Following the panel, we hosted round table dinner discussions over Poke Bowls and CREAM ice-cream sandwiches so the panelists and students could connect personally.

Here are our highlights of the event.

    Panel Discussion

    Zara Khan leads the strategy and business development efforts for the agriculture market at Planet. She brings over 10 years of experience working across both public and private sectors, including the International Finance Corporation (IFC), McKinsey, TechnoServe, and Lehman Brothers. Zara holds an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley's Haas School of Business, where she was a Dean’s Fellow, and a BS from Georgetown University.

    Michael Lapides leads corporate and product marketing for Orbital Insight where he identifies and resolves the largest challenges facing financial institutions, corporations, and governments with AI and geospatial data. Michael has an extensive background in Go-to-Market product leadership forged from years of experience in mission-driven Israeli and Silicon Valley tech companies including Amdocs, Israeli Aerospace Industries, and SodaStream. As Orbital Insight seeks to make truth universally accessible, Michael’s passion lies in putting real customer needs at the center of this vision to help them realize new economic, social, and environmental possibilities. He holds an MBA from Bar-Ilan University with a focus in international business.

    Jordan Winkler leads business development for the Descartes Labs platform where his primary focus is helping customers create actionable business intelligence with geospatial data. Jordan's passion is bringing geospatial analytics solutions to new industries and helping to develop the next generation of geospatial products. Jordan has a rich background in spatial analysis and statistics, and holds a PhD in geography from Boston University where he pioneered new techniques for assessing the risk of climate change to agricultural productivity in China. Previously, Jordan worked at DigitalGlobe where he launched an incubator program to bring new startup technology into the GBDX ecosystem.

    Moderator: Marshall Burke is an assistant professor in the Department of Earth System Science, deputy director at the Center on Food Security and the Environment, and center fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI) at Stanford University. He is a co-founder of Atlas AI and now serves as its chief economic advisor. His research focuses on social and economic impacts of environmental change, and on the economics of rural development in Africa. His work has appeared in both economics and scientific journals, including recent publications in Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and the Review of Economics and Statistics. He holds a PhD in agricultural and resource economics from the University of California, Berkeley and a BA in international relations from Stanford University.
