The Stanford Center on Global Poverty and Development celebrated its launch with a special event featuring keynote speaker Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Chair of the Gavi Vaccine Alliance Board, previous Finance Minister of Nigeria and former Managing Director of the World Bank Group. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala spoke on "Enabling development: when can technology be effective?"

After introductions by the Center's director, Grant Miller, and welcome remarks by Stanford President Marc Tessier-Lavigne, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala delivered the keynote address, followed by a Q&A moderated by Stanford economist Pascaline Dupas. The event concluded with a reception.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala has twice served as Nigeria’s Finance Minister, most recently between 2011 and 2015. Previously, in 2006, she served as Foreign Affairs Minister. She has also held several key positions at the World Bank, including as Managing Director.
