Speaker Series with Latanya Mapp Frett, Mozn Hassan and Anne Firth Murray

About the speakers:

Latanya Mapp Frett is president and CEO of Global Fund for Women, which works to strengthen gender justice movements to shift power, privilege, and perception and create meaningful change that will last beyond our lifetimes. As a feminist fund, Global Fund for Women offers flexible support to a diverse group of partners—more than 5,000 groups across 175 countries so far. Previously, Latanya was the Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Global, the international arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Ms. Frett worked for eight years as a human rights officer for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and for 10 years with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Mozn Hassan is a feminist and human rights defender in Egypt. Nazra for Feminist Studies, the organization she founded in 2007, has documented human rights violations and coordinated the response to the alarming number of sexual assaults on women participating in public protests during and after the Egyptian revolution of 2011, ensuring that survivors received medical, psychological and legal support. Additionally, Nazra engaged in coalitions of women’s groups who successfully lobbied for the inclusion of women’s rights in Egypt’s 2014 Constitution and ensured the passage of amendments to the Egyptian Penal Code to include sexual harassment and expand the definition of sexual crimes. Nazra also mentors young women in politics, including candidates for parliamentary, municipal and union elections from across Egypt’s political spectrum.

Anne Firth Murray is the founding president of Global Fund for Women and a consulting professor at Stanford University, where she teaches on international women's health. Ms. Murray has served on numerous boards and received many honors for her work on women's health and philanthropy. Her book on the early years of the Global Fund, Paradigm Found: Leading and Managing for Positive Change, was published in 2006. Her second book, on international women's health and human rights, From Outrage to Courage: Women Taking Action for Health and Justice, was published in 2008. 

Lisa Blaydes is a professor of political science at Stanford University. She is the author of Elections and Distributive Politics in Mubarak’s Egypt (Cambridge University Press, 2011) and State of Repression: Iraq under Saddam Hussein (Princeton University Press, 2018). Professor Blaydes received the 2009 Gabriel Almond Award for best dissertation in the field of comparative politics from the American Political Science Association for this project. Her articles have appeared in the American Political Science Review, International Studies Quarterly, International Organization, Journal of Theoretical Politics, Middle East Journal, and World Politics. During the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 academic years, Professor Blaydes was an academy scholar at the Harvard Academy for international and area studies. She holds degrees in political science (PhD) from the University of California, Los Angeles and international relations (BA, MA) from Johns Hopkins University.
