About the speaker:

Sir Partha Dasgupta was educated in Varanasi (India), Delhi, and Cambridge and obtained his PhD in economics from the University of Cambridge in 1968. He has taught at the London School of Economics (1971-1984), University of Cambridge (1985-2010), and Stanford University (1989-1992). His research interests span widely in economics, demography, population ethics, and ecology. He is the author or co-author of 300 journal articles and author or editor of more than 20 books. He is a Fellow of the British Academy, Fellow of the Royal Society, Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Science, Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and Foreign Member of the American Philosophical Society. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2002 for "services to economics".

Lawrence H. Goulder is the Shuzo Nishihara Professor in Environmental and Resource Economics at Stanford, a senior fellow at SIEPR and at Stanford’s Precourt Institute for Energy, and director of the Stanford Environmental and Energy Policy Analysis Center. His research examines the environmental and economic impacts of environmental policies in the U.S. and China, with a focus on policies to deal with climate change and air pollution. His work also explores the sustainability of natural resources and well-being in several countries. He has served on advisory committees to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the California Air Resources Board, and various environmental research organizations. Dr. Goulder graduated from Harvard College with an AB in philosophy and received his PhD in economics from Stanford.
