The Berkeley Center for Political Economy (BCEP) and the Stanford King Center on Global Development are happy to announce that the 2021 DEVPEC Conference took place online on Wednesday, April 28 and Thursday, April 29.

This event focused on applied micro topics related to development economics and political economy and gave PhD students the opportunity to present their research and learn about other students’ work. Participants also interacted with each other as well as faculty members in an informal and relaxed environment.

The keynote talk was delivered by Professor Katherine Casey, Associate Professor of Political Economy at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. In the past, keynote talks were given by Marcella Alsan, Noam Yuchtman, Ricardo Perez-Truglia, Fred Finan and Rohini Pande.

The conference organizers: Daria Bakhareva (UC Berkeley), Marshall Mo (Stanford), Andres Felipe Rodriguez (Stanford) and J. Landin Smith (UC Berkeley).

Application Process

The ideal candidate is a PhD candidate in Economics that is doing primarily applied research in development economics and political economy. PhD students from related departments like political science and business schools are also welcome.

You are asked to submit a working paper, which must be single-authored or co-authored with other students, by:

Monday, March 8, 2021, 11:59pm PST

Papers co-authored with faculty will be considered as long as it is clear that the primary author(s) is a PhD student. (Examples from the past include job market papers co-authored with faculty for data access reasons.)

The selection committee will consist of a panel of Berkeley and Stanford junior faculty and PhD students.

A decision will be made by Monday, March 29, 2021.

You will then be required to confirm participation by Monday, April 5, 2021.

If selected to present, you may also be asked to be a discussant for one of the other selected papers and will have to attend the full event.

The application should be sent via email to devpecconference@gmail.com, with subject “Bay Area PhD Conference Application”. Please include the working paper, your full name, your institution, program, and year in the program. Strong preference will be given to PhD students who are currently not on the job market.
