News Consumption in Developing Countries: Consumption Patterns and the Effects on Increasing Consumption on Information Knowledge and Political Preferences

This project studies news consumption patterns and the effects of increasing consumption on information knowledge and political preferences in Brazil. We conduct an intervention that provides digital subscriptions and newsletters of large, well-known news organizations to individuals. Importantly, individuals are allowed to choose their preferred news source. We then combine survey and administrative data to measure consumption patterns and informational knowledge. First, we will investigate patterns of consumption across socioeconomic groups and how income inequality translates into information inequality. Second, we estimate the effects of the intervention on consumption and political preferences, with a focus on polarization and democratic preferences.
