The Effects of Increasing Access to and Reading of Professionally-Produced News

We study the role of increasing access and reading of professional news on news consumption habits, informational knowledge, and political preferences. We recruit 1,660 social media users during the 2022 Brazilian Elections and ask all participants to pick their preferred news outlet among five possible options. We randomize free three-month digital subscriptions to the news outlet chosen by the participant. For some participants, we also implement small monetary incentives to reading the news through biweekly 'encouragement' news quizzes. We collect administrative data on news consumption and self-reported measures including news habits, informational knowledge, and democratic preferences.
