Mental Health, Gender-based Violence, and HIV Medication Adherence among AGYW in Western Kenya: A Longitudinal Cohort Study
We will investigate the understudied intersection of HIV, mental health, and intimate partner violence (IPV) in adolescent girls and young women aged 15-24 in western Kenya, which has a substantial HIV burden. Building on a cross-sectional study from 2022 that identified depression and emotional IPV as significant hindrances to antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence, we propose to re-survey these participants to elucidate the long-term effects of poor mental health and IPV on ART adherence through the use of causal inference modeling. This study will provide valuable insights for future interventions to improve ART adherence and decrease poor mental health and IPV.
Jonathan Altamirano, Department of Epidemiology and Population Health
Jonathan Altamirano, MS, is a PhD student in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health at the Stanford School of Medicine. His research focuses on the intersection between infectious disease, intimate partner violence, and poor mental health, with an interest in using causal inference methodology in this space. Jonathan holds a BA in Human Biology and an MS in Biology, both from Stanford University. Before starting his doctorate degree, Jonathan worked in pediatric global health research for 6 years, working on data analysis and research management alongside in-country partners in Mexico, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Kenya. Jonathan is also the senior research data analyst at the Office of Faculty Development and Diversity, where he works on research related to academic diversity and health equity.
