Academic Year Part-Time Undergraduate Research Fellow Program

This program provides support for part-time, undergraduate student research fellows for Stanford faculty members working on global development challenges critical for low- and middle-income countries. Undergraduate research fellows, who must be enrolled full-time to participate, are paid $19/per hour and may work no more than 10 hours per week.

King Center faculty affiliates may request one undergraduate research fellow for the academic year (excluding summer quarter). Faculty may have a particular student in mind or King Center staff can help advertise and collect student applications from which faculty will select their undergraduate research fellow.

The King Center manages the hiring, administration, and funding for undergraduate research fellows. Faculty will be responsible for other research costs, such as equipment and software. Please read the Expectations and Resources, and the Participation Agreement for more details on the expectations for both faculty and student research fellows.

Stanford faculty members who are members of the academic council or University Medical Line (UML) faculty, King Center postdocs, and King Center affiliated researchers are eligible for this program.

Clinician Educators, Clinical Professors, and Instructors are not eligible for this program.

The priority deadline for faculty proposals was August 24, 2025 for those interested in hiring a Stanford undergraduate, part-time, research fellow for the academic year.  You are welcome to submit a request, however due to overwhelming responses positions have been allocated to priority applicants and you will be added to a wait-list in the event we have additional funding.

Summer Full-Time Undergraduate Research Fellow Program

This program allows undergraduate students to gain research experience addressing global development challenges in low- and middle-income countries, and provides faculty with full-time research fellows for the summer quarter. Students will receive a stipend from the King Center that covers most associated costs including a supplement for financial aid (if applicable), incidental expenses and, should travel be allowed, travel and lodging costs. Faculty will be responsible for other research costs, such as transportation to field sites, software, or equipment.

Preference will be given to field research opportunities should Stanford policies allow for undergraduate student travel. All proposals will need to incorporate a remote work option should field research not be allowed for undergraduate students.

Stanford faculty members who are members of the academic council or University Medical Line (UML) faculty are eligible for this program.

King Center postdocs, King Center affiliated researchers, Clinician Educators, Clinical Professors, and Instructors are not eligible for this program.

Faculty who are interested in having a full-time undergraduate research fellow for summer quarter during the 2024–2025 academic year should submit a request by completing this form. The King Center will contact you to confirm support of your research fellow request. The deadline for summer RF proposals was February 2, 2025.

If you have not already identified a student, the King Center will advertise the research position and administer the student application process. Faculty will select the undergraduate research fellow from applications to their position.

Please contact the King Center at kingcenter_programs@stanford.edu with any questions.
