The Academic Year Part-Time Undergraduate Research Fellow Program connects King Center faculty affiliates and affiliated researchers with undergraduate students committed to providing research support for no more than 10 hours per week during autumn, winter, and spring quarters.
Students have the opportunity to engage in world-class research and have real-world impact. Undergraduate student research fellows are paid a stipend of $1,500. Students must be enrolled full-time to participate.
In October 2023 we learned about changes to financial aid support for the academic year. The statement from the Stanford Financial Aid Office:
If a student is receiving financial aid and stipend during enrolled periods, the stipend payment(s) will be treated as “additional resources”. A typical aid recipient has $5,000 expected student responsibility (SR) which is not a grant or a scholarship. We will replace the SR first with any other sources of funding such as departmental stipend, outside scholarship, work study, or student’s loan. Once this SR $5,000 is reached (fully met by the other sources of funding), then we will start reducing the institutional scholarship. This change applies to the whole university stipend process. In any cases - if the student is to receive outside scholarships and multiple stipends throughout the academic year, total amount of stipends plus outside scholarships can cause the reduction on the need-based scholarship. This stipend payment may impact the financial aid including need-based scholarship.
Note that this change does not affect summer quarter stipend funding.
We encourage you to consult with the Financial Aid Office about accepting a stipend for our research opportunity and how it might affect your personal aid. We encourage you to submit for research positions during the academic year and let us know immediately if you learn that accepting the stipend may have implications for your funding – we will look into other options for/with you.

Please note that the faculty member must request the research fellow support from the King Center, so if you are an undergraduate student and are interested in a particular faculty affiliate's research, please contact the Faculty Affiliate and/or affiliated researcher directly.
