Hayagreeva Rao is the Atholl McBean Professor of Organizational Behavior, the Human Resources Professor of Sociology by courtesy, and a professor of sociology by courtesy at Stanford. Rao also serves as the director of People, Culture, and Performance: Strategies from Silicon Valley, the co-director of the Customer-Focused Innovation Executive Program, and the co-director of the Stanford Innovation and Entrepreneurship Certificate.

Professor Rao has published widely in the fields of management and sociology and studies the social and cultural causes of organizational change. In his research, he studies the sub-processes of organizational change, including the creation of new social structures, the transformation of existing social structures, and the dissolution of existing social structures. His recent work investigates the role of social movements as motors of organizational change in professional and organizational fields.
