Margaret Levi

Margaret Levi is the Sara Miller McCune Director of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, a professor of political science, and a senior fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment at Stanford University. She is also Jere L. Bacharach Professor Emerita of International Studies in the department of political science at the University of Washington. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a John Simon Guggenheim Fellow, a member of the National Academy of Sciences,  a member of the American Philosophical Society, and the Robert Dahl Fellow of the American Academy of Political and Social Science. 

Previously, Levi served as president of the American Political Science Association, a senior fellow at the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University, and the politics chair of the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney, where she is currently an affiliate professor. At the University of Washington, she was the director of the Comparative Historical Analysis of Organizations and States Center and the Harry Bridges Chair and Director of the Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies. She was also the general editor of Cambridge Studies in Comparative Politics and is the co-general editor of Annual Review of Political Science.

Levi is the author or coauthor of numerous articles and seven books, including Of Rule and Revenue; Consent, Dissent, and Patriotism; Analytic Narratives; and Cooperation Without Trust?. She is the winner of the 2019 Johan Skytte Prize and the 2014 William H. Riker Prize in Political Science. She earned her BA from Bryn Mawr College, her PhD from Harvard University, and an honorary doctorate from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.
