Project abstract:
How does the state deal with specialists in violence after their raison-detre loses salience? In this project, we want to explore the reintegration of specialists in violence into mainstream society. We expect that experience in the military might lead to a concurrent ability to enforce contracts in a weak legal system. We therefore predict that violence specialists may be best suited towards commercial reintegration in markets and industries that are contract intensive. We intend to study this demilitarization of elites in the historical context of Ottoman Anatolia and Egypt.
