Varieties of Urbanism: Within-City and Across-City Variation in Urban Experiences in Uganda

Urban growth in many African countries is especially rapid in secondary cities and towns, yet most scholarship on urbanization focuses on the largest cities in the region. The demographics of these secondary cities vary from the largest metropolises in important ways‚ such as the degree of local ethnic diversity, with implications for residents and attitudes towards inter-ethnic relations. This exploratory award will support original survey-data collection in Uganda. Lyon will leverage surveys conducted in three Ugandan cities to deepen our understanding of how urban experiences differ across cities and the implications of these divergent experiences for inter-ethnic relations.
