Stigma, Beliefs and Productivity

Stigma is present in many societies and are sometimes institutionalized, as in India's caste system. This can affect many important areas of one's life such as education or labor market outcomes. Why does stigma persist? Yoshida hypothesizes that people who are stigmatized internalize the stigma and this directly influences their self-confidence and perceived returns to effort, which can lead to caste differences in performance that can perpetuate stigma and discrimination. Yoshida proposes to conduct some exploratory work in India in order to test this hypothesis.
